Network Configuration Manager Device Templates
Device Templates for Network Configuration Manager (NCM) define the commands to connect, back up, restore, or perform other configuration-related operations on a device. For performing these operations, the On-Premise Poller connects to the device using protocols like SSH, SSH - SCP, SSH - TFTP, Telnet, and Telnet - TFTP. Device Templates facilitate understanding device-specific commands for configuration backups, discovering devices in NCM, syncing the start-up or running configurations, and knowing the commands to obtain the hardware details.
Selecting the correct device template will ensure smooth functioning for various operations. If an incorrect template is chosen, configuration functions like backup and restore will not be possible.
If the selected device template is not working properly, you must execute and verify the commands provided in the device template details page for each device.
View NCM Device Templates
- Log in to your Site24x7 account.
- Navigate to Network > NCM > Device Templates.
- Click each template name to view the supported protocols and the commands used for the operations.

Working with NCM Device Templates
Example 1:
Let's consider a Cisco vendor with different device templates.
- On the Device Template page, select Cisco from the drop-down menu.
- Click the Cisco IOS Router device template to view the different supported protocols: SSH, SSH - SCP, SSH - TFTP, TELNET, and TELNET - TFTP. The Cisco IOS Router performs various operations, as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3 below.
Each vendor supports a different set of protocols to back up, upload, and perform other actions. The commands for an operation will differ depending on the protocol.
Figure 2. Backing up and disabling syslog change detection using TELNET - TFTP
Figure 2 shows the operations performed using TELNET - TFTP, like backing up the running configuration, backing up the startup configuration, and disabling syslog change detection.
Although TELNET - TFTP supports the upload configuration operation, TELNET doesn't.
Figure 3. Other operations using TELNET - TFTP protocol
Figure 3 shows operations using the TELNET - TFTP protocol, like enabling syslog change detection, getting the hardware details, syncing the configurations, uploading the running configurations, and uploading the start-up configuration.
Example 2:
Let's next consider a Brocade vendor with six different device templates.
- On the Device Template page, select Brocade from the drop-down menu.
- Click the Brocade Switch device template to view the supported protocols: SSH and SSH - SCP. Other protocols, like SSH - TFTP, TELNET, and TELNET - TFTP, are not displayed as they are not supported.
- Click the SSH protocol. This ensures NCM completes the backups of the running configuration using the commands listed.
Figure 4. Brocade Switch SSH commands - Click the SSH - SCP. This ensures NCM completes the backups and the uploads of the running configuration for the Brocade Switch.
Picking the correct NCM device template will ensure the successful completion of operations like backups and uploads of running configurations.
