Add a wireless LAN controller monitor

Wireless LAN controller (WLC) monitoring in Site24x7 enables you to track performance and availability metrics for your WLC devices, providing insights into connected access points, SSIDs, clients, and outages.

Adding a WLC monitor

  1. Log in to your Site24x7 account.
  2. Navigate to Network > WLC and click the plus icon + beside WLC Devices.
  3. Provide the following details:
    1. Display Name: A user-defined name to identify the monitor in the Site24x7 portal.
    2. Hostname/IP Address: The DNS name or IP address of the network device to be monitored.
    3. Vendor: The manufacturer or vendor of the device (e.g., Cisco, Juniper).
    4. Device Model: The specific model of the device
    5. Protocol: The communication protocol used for monitoring (SNMP).
    6. Credential Name: The name of the credentials configured in Site24x7 for authentication.
    7. Monitoring Locations: The On-Premise Poller service from which the device will be monitored.
    8. Monitor Groups: Logical groupings of monitors for better organization and reporting.
    9. Dependent on Monitor: A parent monitor on which this device's availability depends; helps avoid false alerts during outages.
  4. Click Save to add the WLC as a monitor.

Adding an access point as a monitor

  1. Navigate to Network > WLC. Then, go to the Access Points tab. Here you can view access points in three separate tabs:
    1. All: Shows all access points (discovered and monitored).
    2. Discovered: Displays newly detected access points that have not yet been added for monitoring but were discovered in the last poll.
    3. Unmapped: Shows access points that were discovered in the previous polls but were not available in the last poll.
  2. To monitor any access point, click the plus icon + in the Monitored column.
  3. In the Add Access Point form that opens, provide or verify the following details:
    1. Display Name: A user-friendly name to identify the access point in Site24x7.
    2. Device Name (read-only): SNMP-fetched device name of the access point.
    3. IP Address (read-only): The IP address of the access point.
    4. Vendor (read-only): The access point vendor (e.g., Cisco, Aruba) from the drop-down menu.
    5. Device Model (read-only): The model of the access point, if available.
    6. WLC Monitor (read-only): An existing WLC monitor has already been added to Site24x7, to which the access point connects.
    7. Check Frequency: Set how often the access point should be polled (e.g., every 1 hour, 3 hours, etc.).
    8. Monitoring Locations: Choose the location or On-Premise Poller from which to monitor the device.
    9. Monitor Groups (optional): Add the access point to one or more monitor groups for better organization.
    10. Dependent on Monitor (optional): Select a parent monitor to suppress alerts during upstream failures.
  4. Click Save to add the access point as a monitor.

Best practices

  • Ensure SNMP credentials have the correct permissions to access the access point and SSID data.
  • Set threshold alerts for:
    • Response Time: To detect delays or degraded performance.
    • Traffic Usage: To identify overloaded or underutilized access points.
  • Regularly check the Unmapped tab to identify access points that might have been disassociated from WLCs.
