VMware datastore monitoring

View the virtual machines that use your datastore the most in terms of key metrics like latencies, operations per second, occupied space, allocated space, and disk space management.

Prerequisites

Adding a VMware datastore monitor

A VMware datastore can be discovered automatically and added while adding a VMware ESX/ESXi monitor.

Polling: You can choose how would you prefer your monitors to be polled—via VMware vCenter or the individual VMware ESX/ESXi host credential. Learn more about VMware polling.

To add a datastore monitor for an existing VMware ESX/ESXi monitor:

  1. Log in to Site24x7.
  2. Navigate to VMware > VMware Resource > VMware ESX/ESXi Host.
  3. Choose a VMware ESX/ESXi host.
  4. In the monitor's dashboard, click the hamburger icon Hamburger icon near the name of the monitor, and click Edit.
  5. In the Edit monitor form that opens up, under Discover and Auto-add Resources field, toggle Yes for Datastores to enable the datastore monitor.
Note

Add all the snapshots associated with your datastore for monitoring so that you can effectively manage your space requirements.

You can monitor up to 20 VMs with the basic monitor licensing. Beyond this, an additional basic monitor license is required for every 20 VMs. When the Fetch every VM storage and latency metrics option on the Edit monitor page of the datastore monitor is enabled, the system collects data for all the datastore-associated VMs, which may exceed the 20 VM threshold per license.

For example, if a datastore monitor is associated with 51 VMs, the calculation will be 51/20 = 2.55. By rounding off, three basic monitor licenses are required.
